CCPP Mission

Engaging rural community (ies) affected by over two decades civil war in Southern Sudan to improve education facilities for Kindergarten schools.

About Yari Kindergarten project

With a population estimated at 7,050 (census.2006), Yari is 16 miles from Yei town along the Yei-Kaya road, which connects Southern Sudan to Uganda. A small community with few institutions, Yari has a Primary School, three churches (The Episcopal Church of Sudan, Pentecostal Church, and the Roman Catholic Church) and a kindergarten. The community relies on subsistence farming.

With the postwar economic situation in Southern Sudan, the community cannot fund the construction of classrooms for kindergarten students.Untrained teachers from within the community have been volunteering to teach the children under trees.

In 2006, Christine traveled to Southern Sudan to visit her parents and visited the school in Yari. …. “Seeing the kids under the mango trees is no different from my own childhood experiences”. (Christine project coordinator)

In the spring of 2008, while a student at Luther College, Christine wrote a proposal and received a $10,000 grant from the Davis Projects for Peace Foundation for the development of a Kindergarten in Yari village.
